Music!

They do rock, and its not even ironic.

They do rock, and it's not even ironic.

As the three people who followed me over from my old blog to this blog can attest, I did a considerable amount of writing about music. Heck, it’s what I vaguely do for a living (if you can call it that *insert bitter hurrumph*), and so it’s a pretty big passion.

Lately though, something has changed, and it’s been quite the horrifying problem: I’m starting to like a lot of new indie rock.

I’m not proud of this, but it’s something that has been gradual.  Usually, I find a cool band du jour and obsess about them for a few months, all while really getting into the dusty and lusty Stax CDs I’d never heard, or the pot smoke-thickened AM Gold country rock that I love so much. But lately, for some reason, the sounds of young men and their guitars, freshly out of college and trying to carve out their niche in a rock n’ roll world that is already over saturated has started to intrigue me again.

Maybe it’s because I’m doing a ton of work trying to get this new music site off the ground and it’s making me have to actually listen to new bands and really take them in instead of seeing their product as a few more groceries at the store if I can spew out a hundred and fifty words on them at a time.  But either way, the last few weeks of my life has been less about Glen Campbell and more about We Were Promised Jetpacks, not as much Sam & Dave and maybe too much Deerhunter, and even forsaken Red Sovine singing “Teddy Bear” and embracing Grizzly Bear.

I don’t know, but I like it. It feels vital.

So what’s everyone else listening to? Be honest.

Also, be good.

  1. I’m liking the new look of the blog. I’ve been horrible about keeping in touch and up-to-date with your blog (as is the life of an academic whore)- but I promise to be better. And I’m intrigued by this transition with your music…I look forward to hearing more. So, add me to the three that moved over to this blog.

  2. [...] but a few labels that I love are starting to send me promos of their music to review, and as I wrote earlier on this very blog, it’s been great getting to know new bands. It’d been a long winter for me, both literally and [...]
