The Sixties were a strange time. That’s probably the biggest cliché imaginable, but every once in a while when you hear a piece of rock n’ roll that isn’t ingrained in our collective social psyche, you realize how out there just about every rock band was post-1967.

Rockford, Illinois’ Pisces were no exception. The band’s handcrafted and homemade (and never before released) 1969 opus A Lovely Sight sums up everything about late 60’s psychedelia in one arching swoop: the tuneful pop, goofy mysticism, acid-drenched freak outs and the creepy moments when all of these blend together make for an engaging listen.

Highlights of the album include the strange but hypnotic “Children Kiss Your Mother Goodnight”, “Motley Mary Ann” and “Sam”. In fact, there’s not a dud on the album, with the exception of “Genesis II”- a ham-fisted lecture on the end of times a la Donovan’s “Atlantis”.

The album, unheard until unleashed by The Numero Group, is well worth checking out. Just be ready to let the sunshine in as well as the creepy parts.
